Golden Horde (1243-1502)
While leading the Mongols' second Western ex- pedition in 1244, Batu (second son Genghis Khan's first son Jochi, 1208-1255) received news about the death of Ogedei Khan, whereupon he marched his army back home, establishing the Golden Horde in areas of Khwarezm and the lower Volga River, which had been allotted to Jochi (Genghis Khan's first son), with Sarai Batu (modern-day Astrakhan, on the northern shores of the Caspian Sea, estab- lished in 1243) as the capital.
